AdminHistoryThe Sherdley Estate Papers are a record of the Hughes family, who were residents of Sherdley Hall and owners of lands and estates (both tenanted and untenanted) in St.Helens and Lancashire. Michael Hughes I moved to St.Helens in 1779 to be the manager of the new Ravenhead Copper Works. From 1795, Hughes started to buy land and estates in the Sutton area on which Sherdley Hall was completed in 1806. He was succeeded in 1825 by his son, Michael Hughes II, who was himself succeeded by his own son and heir, Michael James Hughes in 1886. The contents of the Hall were auctioned following the death of Michael James Hughes in 1938. By 1949 the Hall, Park and Home Farm (comprising 377 acres) were sold to St.Helens Corporation.
