| AdminHistory | The school received its first intake of pupils in 1964, although the official opening occurred in 1965. St Aelred's began as a secondary modern school (it was the only secondary school in England to be dedicated to a saint). In the 1970s it became a comprehensive school and in 2000 a technology college, closing down in July 2011. At this point St. Aelred's Catholic Technology College merged with Newton High School to form the Newton Academy, which was opened in a new building in 2011 as part of the 'Schools for the future' initiative. |
