AdminHistory | St.Helens Ragged School was established as a non-denominational 'Sunday' school by Fenwick Allen, in a rented cottage in 1858 in High Street, Greenbank. The aim of the school was to combat squalor, poverty and lack of education in the Greenbank area. Over the years the school outgrew its premises and moved to a joiner's shop over a timber steaming plant at the corner of Russell Street and Water Street. In 1861 it became a day school in Arthur Street, St.Helens, via support from the Pilkington family. |
