NotesWhen Catherine Ellen Knapper (MX/96/2) was old enough to leave school, she was sent to work in a mill in Darwen, Lancashire where she lived with an order of nuns. She was quite unhappy there and her brother Reginald always maintained that he was going to save up enough money for her to return home. Unfortunately this never occurred as he "went missing" during the war and was never seen again. However, Catherine did return home because her mother died, leaving her miner father to look after six children.
