AdminHistory | The records relate to the history of the Dutton family of St.Helens. John Joseph Dutton was born in Ashton-under Lyme, Lancashire in 1837 and arrived in St.Helens in 1860 to teach at the Cowley British School, North Road, St.Helens. He became headmaster in 1875. He contributed newspaper articles titled "Glimpses of old St.Helens" to the "St.Helens Lantern". He had 7 sons and 2 daughters. J.J. Dutton died in Roby, Lancashire in 1919.
The collection contains items relating to sons of J.J. Dutton including Arthur Watts Dutton (who worked for Pilkington Brothers Ltd. and served in the First World War) and S.W. Dutton (who became a Scoutmaster in Australia).
The majority of the records refer to J.J. Dutton's son Horace Revitt Dutton who was born 2 Jun 1873 and became the Borough Treasurer of St.Helens in 1913.
H. R. Dutton married Sarah Helena Jackson (who was known as "Lena"). Lena was the granddaughter of George Harris, a builder in St.Helens. Her parents were Catherine Harris and Thomas Haigh Jackson. Her brother was Thomas Haigh Jackson, who became a noted tenor singer.
Horace and Lena Dutton had 3 daughters - Rita, Enid, and Vera and a son - John Haigh Dutton (known as "Jack"). Rita Harris Dutton was born in 1900 and became a teacher in Grantham, Lincolnshire before moving permanently to the Lake District in 1956. She died in 1976. Vera Dutton was born c. 1906. Enid and Vera later lived in New Zealand. |
