A lawsuit arose when the partnership was dissolved and the separate companies had issues over the patent for tank furnace design, which took three years of appeals to finally resolve in Cannington's favour. It resulted in Francis Dixon-Nuttall being declared bankrupt in 1871, but over time he became reconciled with the Canningtons.
